I took an Uber to the doctor today and the driver was playing awesome hip-hop music. The musical experience was totally outside my usual listening sphere, and it was super engaging.
There was a joke song whose refrain mentioned “my pee-pee goes doing doing” and being a creep at a movie theater1. And then there was a hard hitting track about being an alcoholic and drinking so much in order to forget how much you drink. And then another track about being a man, and having a hard time talking to your family honestly, because of how much they expect of you as the man.
The guy driving obviously knew the tracks and sort of absent-mindedly sang along. It was definitely his usual driving jam. Super cool experience.
It makes me wish we could hear other people’s jams more often. Like, really get outside our usual musical spheres. Imagine asking a stranger if you could share2 their earbuds?
Turns out it was Eminem - Ass Like That. Who knew Eminem is hilarious? Not me. Another track in the set was Eminem - Lose Yourself which was always on the radio when I was a kid. ↩︎
It’s probably easy to share Bluetooth. Back when I was a teen, you would occassionally come across headphone jack splitters. ↩︎
