We can’t quite remember the context but Mira told us: “You’re a grown up and life is hard.” So true, love. So true. Thanks for the reminder!
Miller, Kayla. Crunch. HarperCollins Publishers, 2022.
We continue to read Kayla Miller’s books. They’re all about friendship in one way or another. This recent one was about time management and the conflicting demands of friends.
International String Figure Association. The Art of String Figures. Dover Publications, Inc., 2018.
I ordered this one a while back but hadn’t looked in it much. It’s a collection of figures from String Figure Magazine. Recently, I pulled it off the shelf and was delighted by the variety of figures. Lots of action figures that move and change.
Nakahira, Sam, and Getty Publications. Ruth Asawa : An Artist Takes Shape. Getty Publications, 2024.
I’m not sure how I found out about this book. Perhaps it was random internet find? In any case, it was a delightful read. Ruth Asawa is very cool. Her work is mesmerizing. There was an unexpected Quaker connection. “Quaker organization called the Japanese American Student Relocation Council gave her a scholarship to attend college in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.”

The Bridges article was accepted! This time, it was accepted without revisions. We’re going to Bridges 2026 to present string figures.
For the month of May, the big writing task at hand is to write up my continuing status review dossier. This is the follow up to the probationary review dossier.
I’m excited to get back to the project about growing linearly independent sets. Recently, I realized that things work differently for $p = 2$ and $p \geq 3$. I’m curious to figure out what that happens. We have a pretty good draft of the article and just need to polish it up a bit and add some puzzles.
I got so excited about ZerosumZ, or 7-Card Projective Set, that I had to craft a deck. This was a nice screen-free activity for a rainy afternoon home alone. The cards got coloured in after taking the photo shown above. While writing this up, I found a Proset Deck Generator. Here are some lovely geometric cards and another deck that I put together using these icons. These icon packs could be helpful in making other decks: pets or abstract organic. More to come!
This week, we were asked to pull out all the ugly orange fencing surrounding our plot. It was a lot of work but we managed to pull out most of it. The next task is to replace the fencing.
toki kulupu pi wile pona: A message about recent happenings in the toki pona community. Sonja was my room mate when I moved to Toronto. It is hard to watch her go through this difficult time.
