This post is 71 of 71 in the series week notes.

General #

This week, I got rather distracted by a pair of side quests. All my writing time went to these projects.

Oh yeah. I’m also back to preparing for my fall teaching.

Poole, David G. “The Towers and Triangles of Professor Claus (or, Pascal Knows Hanoi).” Mathematics Magazine, vol. 67, no. 5, 1994, pp. 323–44. JSTOR, https://doi.org/10.2307/2690991. Accessed 18 Aug. 2026.

A delightful article about Towers of Hanoi. It explains the connection between the odd entries in Pascal’s Triangle and the Hanoi graph. I went down a deep rabbit hole reading this one. It will probably turn in to some material for MAT A02: The Magic of Numbers.

I love the style of the article: careful, thorough, thoughtful notation, lots of references to the literature, a few jokes. Definitely an example to learn from.
