War and Peace

I absolutely love War and Peace. It’s easily in my top five favourite novels of all time. The Russian title Война и мир (Voyna i Mir) involves the Proto-Slavic root mirъ which means “peace, the world, humanity”. And so, the title could be translated as “War and the World” or “War and Humanity”.

For a long time, I saw War and Peace on lists such as The 100 Best Novels of All Time. I naïvely thought that that was a bit pretentious or silly. And then, I read War and Peace and was absolutely blown away. It contains absolutely everything.

I’ve read it twice now. Once, in my mid-twenties while in graduate school. And a decade later, while chasing around young kids.

I’m excited to read it again.
