As the semester comes to a close, there is less and less of a hectic rush to prepare course materials. Today, after doing a bunch of quiet domestic chores like making hard-boiled eggs, folding the laundry, and sweeping, I decided to walk over to the community center.
It is just a few minutes from our home.
I brought my juggling balls with me and spent some time practicing in the wide open main hall of the community center. A caretaker came up to me and said that he remembered me – the juggling guy. It was nice to see the caretaker again, to show up somewhere and be remembered. We chatted a bit about the community center’s schedule, who does what sports when, ping pong and volley ball, etc. We chatted just to get caught up; really, we chatted to enjoy each other’s company in a neighbourly way.
The community center is really quiet today. Some seniors are playing pickleball. A couple city employees have come inside from their truck to take a Zoom call. A few young people are hanging out in the cozy chairs. Some fool keeps throwing balls and catching them.
I love that there is a warm, clean, well-lit space with a water fountain, washrooms, and comfortable chairs. A place that anyone can just show up and do their own thing.
The perfect place to write a chill blog post.
