Re: What's in My Pocket Friday 2025-07-03

Zak posted a picture of all the stuff in his pocket. Steve responded to that post and mentioned knolling. Anyway, I wanted to chime in and say: “Look at all the different sizes of screws!”

It’s a nice little example of phenotypic variation — one of those “would never think of name it, but once you know about it you see it everywhere” sorts of concepts. The idea is that a single genotype can have a large range of possible expressions. In humans, this isn’t hugely impressive: no matter what environment I grew up in, I’d probably wind up being somewhere between 5'10" and 6'2". Any clone of me would look more or less identical. However, in plants, this range can be totally wild. A single grass genotype can grow from a few centimeters to a few meters tall depending on enviromental conditions. Clones of plants can vary wildly.

Anyway, the screws in Zak’s pockets aren’t clones. But, like, look at those itty-bitty ones! And then the big ones! This is like the situation with dogs. Chihuahuas and great danes were selectively bread from the same source.
