Reply: Tell Me About Your Favorite Tree

Nannnss, a blogger who writes at pixel dirt, wrote a provocative post that I just had to reply to: Tell Me About Your Favourite Tree.

Tell me about your favorite tree. Tell me about the critters that live in it - the ones that call it home. How it changes throughout the seasons and how you framed a leaf that fell from it.

This is definitely my favourite tree. It is right outside our apartment and I spend a lot of time staring at it. As I write this post, it is smiling at me gently. When I took the photo above, it was rain soaked, but now it is drying in the sun.

This tree and I got to know each other when I was on leave from work with the birth of my second daughter, Mabel. I’d sit on the couch, facing it, while holding a new born baby in my arms.

As the year long leave progressed, I saw the tree change slowly. Just outside the immediate day-to-day human timescale. The leaves sprang on to the scene, shone green in the summer heat, withered, fell, and got raked up. It went through a long dormancy. As Mabel started crawling, little buds began to emerge as leaves. It’ll repeat this cycle for as long as we watch it.

My elder daughter, Mira, has taken an interest in climbing it. She was only a newborn when we moved here. Now, she can readily reach the lower branches of the tree. She is constantly getting little scrapes and scratches as she tries to make her way in to a standing position on the lower branches. Soon, she will succeed.

It is fun to watch the kids grow along side this tree.
