Week Notes 24

This post is 24 of 25 in the series week notes.

General #

This is another week on the road. We’re on the East Coast visiting family and friends. It is great to see my extended family. We haven’t been out here in two and half years. My niece visited us last October. She’s grown a lot since I last saw her.

I just learned that this month is “Blaugust” — a month of blogging. Linking to things is hard because I’m writing on my phone in vim via ssh. (Awww, yeah!) So, not a lot of links or photos in this post.

Gardening #

All the families that we’re visiting have extensive gardens. So, this week has had a lot of garden snooping. My sister-in-law has a fifteen acre hobby farm with chickens. She’s an ecologist, so has a bunch of unfamiliar plants and veggies. Very cool. We’re already scheme-ing next years garden. We’ll put in a small “tea garden” (mint and lavender) and also a “chaos garden” (random seeds).

Reading #

I essentially bought the Kobo so that I could read War and Peace on the road. I’m now two thirds of the way through it. Tolstoy continues to be an absolute virtuoso. He can, apparently, write whatever he wants and pull it off. Part III beings with an informed discussion of differential calculus. It relates Zeno’s paradox of the tortoise and Achilles to the problem of blaming history on individual actors (e.g. Napoleon). And it all reads fluently and beautifully.
