Kangaroo Volunteer Training

Overview #

We will write the Math Kangaroo Contest on March 23rd 2025 in the Instructional Center (IC). Here is a photo of IC, from the south-east corner of Miltary Trail and Ellesmere.

Please arrive at 09:45. We will start setting up at 09:45 sharp. Please arrive a bit early. Registration will start at 10:30. We expect everything to wrap up at 13:15.

Test Lengths and Questions #

We ask students to remain in the room until the end of the allocated time. Parents will be instructed to arrive a bit before the end of the allocated time.

Who Gets What #

Each role is responsible for a particular task. Some roles have specific items that you’ll need.

  1. Registration: Sign-In Paper, and Matching Tickets
  2. Invigilation: Test Papers, Test Covers, Pencils, Give Away

Directional Guide #

Directional guides are responsible for getting the students to their rooms. The students will be writing in the rooms:

There will be signage to indicate where the students are to go. In general, the higher grades will write on higher floors of IC.

The parents will attend a mini-contest hosted by Prof. Mike Cavers in: IC 130. Otherwise, they will hang out in the atrium of IC.

Test Invigilation #

The test invigilation volunteers are responsible for setting up the rooms and invigilating the contest. Each room will have a bundle of tests and test covers. The test cover shows the following information: Room and Seat Number (e.g. IC 120 and Seat 1).

The papers absolutely must be laid out by Seat Number. Viewed from above, looking down on the students, the papers must be laid out in the following order. (Of course, adjust the dimensions of the grid for the size of your room.)

During the test, students may have: Pencils with erasers will also be provided by Kangaroo. Students may also have water in a clear container.

Registration #

The registration volunteers are responsible for getting the students signed in to their rooms. More importantly, the registration volunteers must make sure that every student is signed out to their parent.

Prof. Kielstra has a clever matching system to pair each student with their parent. The students will be given small Matching Ticket showing their Name, School, and Seat Number. The parents will be given an identical blue ticket used to sign the student out. The student will match their Matching Ticket with their test number.

At the end of the event, the registration volunteers will call out the students Seat Number. The parent then presents the corresponding blue Matching Ticket to the registration volunteer and claims the child.

What do we do about senior students (Gr. 9-12)? All students writing with us are legally minors. Legally, there is no different between a five year old and a fifteen year old. All students will need Matching Tickets. They all need to be signed-out by a parent. If a parent is not available, then they should call their parent.
