I grew up in London, Ontario, in an densely populated neighbourhood. There were a tonne of apartment buildings, and many kids from all over the world. I remember growing up among Croatians, Bosnians, Serbians, and many others. What I didn’t know, at the time, was the many of these kids were fleeing the Croatian War of Independence.
Spomenka Štimec’s book Kroata Milita Noktolibro (Croation War Nocturnal) is deeply personal reflection on living through that war. I’ve read one other book by Štimec: Ombro sur Interna Pejzaĝo (A Shadow on the Inner Countryside) which treated her seperation from an Esperantist partner. The tone of the book was heartfelt and somber. The Nocturnal has a similar tone, and it is deeply moving and tragic.
Some reviews of the English translation Croatian War Nocturnal.
